Citizens of EU countries need only a valid national identity card to enter Austria. Since Britain has no identity card, however, British citizens do have to take a passport. EU citizens can stay for as long as they want, but if they're planning on staying permanently they should register with the local police. Citizens of the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia require a passport, but no visa, and can stay up to three months.

Visa requirements do change, however, and it is always advisable to check the current situation before leaving home. We've listed Austrian embassies abroad; addresses of foreign embassies and consulates in Vienna and other major cities are also given in the guide
