GENERAL DESCRIPTION.

BOTSWANA IS A LANDLOCKED NATION IN SOUTHERN AFRICA
COVERING AN AREA OF 581,700 SQ.KM. THE CHOBE RIVER IN THE
NORTHWEST AND THE MOLOPO RIVER IN THE SOUTH SERVE AS THE
NATURAL BOUNDARIES BETWEEN SOUTH WEST AFRICA-NAMIBIA AND
SOUTH AFRICA. BOTSWANA IS ALMOST ENTIRELY FLAT AND FORMS
PART OF THE SOUTHERN AFRICAN PLATEAU RUNNING NORTH TO
SOUTH AT AN AVERAGE HEIGHT OF 1000M ABOVE SEA LEVEL.

TO THE EAST OF THE GREAT PLATEAU THE TERRAIN IS HILLY
GRASSLANDS AND TO THE WEST 10,000 SQ.KM. MAKE UP THE
OKAVANGO SWAMPS. THE KALAHARI DESERT LIES IN THE
SOUTHEAST, IT IS MOSTLY A SEMIDESERT COVERED WITH GRASS
AND ACACIA SCRUB. ABOUT FOUR-FIFTHS OF BOTSWANA IS COVERED
WITH SPARSE SAVANNA VEGETATION WITH THE ONLY TRUE FORESTS
FOUND ON THE BANKS OF THE CHOBE RIVER.
