GENERAL DESCRIPTION.

KAMPUCHEA, IS LOCATED IN THE INDOCHINESE PENINSULA OF
SOUTHEAST ASIA. THE COUNTRY COVERS AN AREA OF 181,038 SQ
KM. IT IS BORDERED BY VIET NAM TO THE EAST AND SOUTHEAST,
THE GULF OF THAILAND TO THE SOUTHWEST, LAOS TO THE
NORTHEAST AND FINALLY BY THAILAND TO THE WEST AND
NORTHWEST.

A CENTRAL PLAIN REIGNS OVER THREE QUARTERS OF THE LAND
AREA. THE MEKONG RIVER FLOWS SOUTH THROUGH THE EASTERN AREA
OF THE COUNTRY. THE LOWLAND AREAS LIE AT LESS THAN 90M
ABOVE SEA LEVEL. THESE AREAS TEND TO BE FERTILE, ALLUVIAL
CENTRAL PLAINS AND ENCIRCLE THE TONLE SAP. THIS IS A GREAT
LAKE DRAINING EAST INTO THE TONLE SAP RIVER AND THE MEKONG
RIVER.

BORDERING THE CENTRAL PLAINS TO THE EAST AND NORTHEAST LIE
THE EASTERN HIGHLANDS REACHING HEIGHTS OF 366M, TO THE
NORTH BY THE CHUOR PHNUM DANGREK AVERAGING 488M AND
EVENTUALLY TO THE SOUTHWEST THE UNINHABITED CHOUR PHNUM
KRAVANH AND THE CHUOR PHNUM DAMREI REACH A HEIGHT OF 1067M.
KAMPUCHEAS HIGHEST PEAK IS, PHNUM AORAL AT 1813M.
