fiogf49gjkf0d P'chum Ben, "Ancestors' Day", in late September, marks the beginning of
festival
season, which continues through until Cambodian New Year in April. In between, the highlight is
Bon Om Dteuk
, the "Water Festival" - celebrated every year when the current of the Tonle Sap River reverses and flows into the Mekong River. The centre of festivities is Phnom Penh's riverbank, where everyone, including the royal family, gathers to watch boat racing, an illuminated boat parade and fireworks. At this time, Phnom Penh's population swells massively, as thousands of country workers head to the capital for the occasion. Festivals tend to be fixed by the lunar calendar, so dates vary from year to year. Offices may shut on national holidays, but everything else continues much as normal.
