CAPE VERDE IS AN ISLAND, SITUATED IN THE CENTRAL ATLANTIC
OCEAN. IT COVERS AN AREA OF 4,033 SQ KM. THE COUNTRY
COMPOSES OF 10 ISLANDS AND 5 ISLETS. THESE MAY BE DIVIDED
INTO THE WINDWARD AND THE LEEWARD GROUPS.

THE WINDWARD ISLANDS COMPRISE OF RUGGED MOUNTAIN CHAINS
WHICH ARE DEEPLY ERODED, WHEREAS THE LEEWARD ISLANDS TEND
TO BE FLATTER WITH LOWLANDS AND PLAINS. THESE ISLANDS ARE
OF VOLCANIC ORIGIN. FOGO ISLAND INCLUDES THE HIGHEST PEAK
AT 2,829M AND IS AN ACTIVE VOLCANO.

CLIFFS FORM THE BOUNDARY ON MOST OF THE ISLANDS, WITH A
STEEP DROP TOWARDS THE SEA. PERMANENT STREAMS ARE NOT FOUND
ON THE WINDWARD ISLANDS. THE ONLY FLOWING WATER ON THESE
ISLANDS IS DURING THE RAINY SEASON.
