COLOMBIA IS A COUNTRY LOCATED IN THE NORTHWESTERN SOUTH
AMERICAN REGION AND COVERS AN AREA OF 1,141,748 SQ.KM. IT
IS BORDERED TO THE EAST BY VENEZUELA AND BRAZIL, TO THE
SOUTHWEST BY PERU AND ECUADOR, TO THE NORTHWEST BY PANAMA
AND THE CARIBBEAN AND FINALLY TO THE WEST BY THE PACIFIC
OCEAN.

COLOMBIA'S GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURES ARE DOMINATED BY THE GREAT
ANDEAN HIGHLANDS. THESE HIGHLANDS SEPARATE THE EASTERN
LOWLAND AREAS, SUCH AS THE LLANOS AND THE AMAZONIA FROM THE
PACIFIC COASTAL LOWLANDS TOWARDS THE WEST. THE COLOMBIAN
ANDES ARE MADE UP OF FOUR CHAINS: THE CORDILLERAS, THE NUDO
DE LOS PASTOS AT THE ECUADORIAN BORDER TO THE CARIBBEAN
SEA, TO THE SOUTH A WESTERN CORDILLERA OCCIDENTAL AND A
CENTRAL CORDILLERA DIVIDED BY A RIFT VALLEY. THESE
CORDILLERA'S SURROUND THE IMPORTANT CAUCA RIVER. COLOMBIA'S
HIGHEST MOUNTAIN PEAK IS THE COLON AND REACHES 5,800M. THE
MAGDALENA BASIN ACCOUNTS FOR THE FLOW FROM THE CARIBBEAN
WATERSHED AND IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT IN COLOMBIA.
