GENERAL DESCRIPTION.

ZAIRE STRADDLES THE EQUATOR IN WEST CENTRAL AFRICA AND
COVERS 2,344,885 SQ KM. THREE-FIFTHS OF ITS SURFACE LIES IN
THE HEART OF THE CONGO RIVER BASIN. THE NORTHERN HALF OF THE
COUNTRY IS TYPICALLY EQUATORIAL WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES AND
YEAR-LONG RAINFALL. SOUTHERN ZAIRE, MAINLY SAVANNAH, ENJOYS
A TROPICAL CLIMATE. ALONG THE EQUATOR THERE IS ESSENTIALLY
NO DRY SEASON; BUT IN THE NORTH IT IS DRY IN WINTER, DECEMBER
- FEBRUARY, AND IN THE SOUTH IT IS DRY IN SUMMER.
