THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC IS AN INDEPENDENT COUNTRY LOCATED IN
THE WEST INDIES. HAITI BORDERS THIS COUNTRY TO THE WEST,
THE ATLANTIC OCEAN TO THE NORTH AND EAST AND FINALLY THE
CARIBBEAN SEA TO THE SOUTH.

THE COUNTRY TENDS TO BE MOUNTAINOUS, WITH HIGH MOUNTAIN
RANGES AND HILLS SPREADING FROM NORTHWEST TO SOUTHEAST. THE
CORDILLERA CENTRAL IS THE MAIN FEATURE AVERAGING HEIGHTS OF
1800M, WITH THE HIGHEST PEAK BEING PICO DURATE AT 3175M.
THE CIBAO VALLEY IN THE NORTHERN CENTRAL REGION IS WELL
KNOWN FOR ITS RICH SOILS. THE WESTERN AREA IS DRY WITH VAST
STRETCHES OF DESERT.

SOME OF THE MAIN RIVERS ARE THE YAQUE DEL NORTE, THE YAQUE
DEL SUR IN THE SOUTH AND THE YURA IN THE EAST. THE LOWEST
POINT IN THE WEST INDIES IS A SALT WATER LAKE, NAMED THE
ENRIQUILLO. THIS LAKE IS SITUATED IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
AND IS APPROXIMATELY 44M BELOW SEA LEVEL.
