FRANCE IS SITUATED IN WESTERN EUROPE, COVERING AN AREA OF
544,000 SQ KM. THE COUNTRY IS BORDERED BY GERMANY, ITALY
AND SWITZERLAND TO THE EAST, BELGIUM, LUXEMBOURG AND THE
ENGLISH CHANNEL TO THE NORTH, THE ATLANTIC OCEAN TO THE
WEST WITH SPAIN AND THE MEDITERRANEAN TO THE SOUTH.

THE MASSIF CENTRAL IS A HIGHLAND AREA, WITH PEAKS RISING TO
2000M ABOVE SEA LEVEL. THIS MASSIF IS LOCATED IN THE SOUTH
CENTRAL REGION AND IS ENCIRCLED BY LOWLANDS AND BASINS.
THESE LOWLANDS LIE BELOW 305M. PRACTICALLY ALL THE LOWLAND
REGIONS ARE CONTAINED IN THE FOUR RIVER BASINS: THE SEINE,
THE LOIRE, THE AQUITAINE AND THE RHONE.

THE SEINE BASIN IS SITUATED TO THE NORTH AND NORTHWEST OF
THE MASSIF CENTRAL, COVERING AN AREA OF 76,729 SQ KM AND
DRAINING INTO THE ENGLISH CHANNEL. DRAINING INTO THE
ATLANTIC OCEAN IS THE LOIRE BASIN, FLOWING THROUGH THE
MASSIF ARMORICAIN ON IT'S JOURNEY. THE LOIRE BASIN IS
102,400 SQ KM. THE AQUITAINE BASIN COMPRISES OF THE GARONNE
RIVERS AND THE GIRONDE ESTUARY ON THE ATLANTIC OCEAN, WHICH
FLOWS TOWARDS THE SOUTHWEST. THE RHONE RIVER VALLEY FLOWS
SOUTH TOWARDS THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA.

THERE ARE FIVE MOUNTAIN CHAINS IN FRANCE: THE ALPS, THE
JURA, THE VOSGES, PYRENEES AND THE ARDENNES. THE ALPS ARE
THE HIGHEST CHAIN WITH MONT BLANC REACHING 4807M. THE JURA
RISE TO APPROXIMATELY 1832M, WHILE THE VOSGES AND THE
ARDENNES ARE OLDER AND MORE WORN DOWN. THE PYRENEES ARE A
LONG MOUNTAIN RANGE EXTENDING ALONG THE SPANISH BORDER FOR
448 KM.
