GENERAL DESCRIPTION.

SITUATED IN THE SOUTH OF SPAIN, NORTHEAST OF THE STRAIT OF
GIBRALTAR. IT IS CONNECTED TO SPAIN BY A LOW SANDY
ISTHMUS.

THE PENINSULA IS COMPOSED OF A LIMESTONE AND SHALE RIDGE
KNOWN AS THE ROCK. THIS ROCK RISES TO A HEIGHT OF 421M AT
ROCK GUN, THE NORTHERN MOST SUMMIT, WITH ITS HIGHEST POINT
BEING AT 426M IN THE SOUTHERN PART. THE ROCK SLOPES
TOWARDS THE MEDITERRANEAN AT EUROPA POINT AND FACES
MOROCCO. THE UPPER AREA OF THE ROCK IS SURROUNDED BY TREES
AND ISOLATED BY HIGH LIMESTONE CLIFFS.

THERE ARE NO RIVERS, STREAMS OR SPRINGS ON THE PENINSULA.
RED SAND BEACHES LIE BENEATH THE ROCK AND SOUTH OF THE
CITY THE SAND BECOMES MORE FAWN COLOURED.
