fiogf49gjkf0d Attitudes towards gays and lesbians in Hungary have softened considerably over the last few years, particularly amongst the younger generation, and especially amongst those living in the larger towns and cities. Whilst Budapest is, unsurprisingly, still the centre of the gay and lesbian scene in Hungary, manifestations of gay life beyond the capital are becoming more visible, with gay bars to be found in several of the larger towns and cities and gay organizations working to support their local gay community.
In Budapest there are an increasing number of organizations dedicated to serving the gay and lesbian community, such as
GayGuide.Net Budapest
, an internet-based gay travel guide which has a wealth of information on the gay scene in the capital. Their excellent website (
www.gayguide.net/europe/hungary/budapest
) lists all gay accommodation in the city as well as gay bars and clubs, restaurants, baths and any events that might be happening. The site also has links to other gay and lesbian organizations in Budapest and other towns and cities throsughout the country. Information can also be obtained via their hotline (daily 4-8pm; tel 06-309/323-334; in English and German).
HattA©r
, the largest gay organization in Hungary, runs several projects including counselling and information hotlines (daily 6-11pm; tel 1/329-3380,
hatter@hatter.hu
), and an AIDS/HIV Prevention Project.
