NEW ZEALAND IS SITUATED IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC, ABOUT 1600KM
FROM AUSTRALIA. IT COVERS AN AREA OF 269,057SQ KM. NEW
ZEALAND HAS TWO MAIN ISLANDS; THE NORTH AND SOUTH,
SEPARATED BY THE COOK STRAIT.

MOUNTAINS CUT THROUGH BOTH THE NORTH AND SOUTH ISLANDS IN
THE SOUTH AND HILLS THROUGH THE NORTH. A 480KM CHAIN OF
MOUNTAINS, CALLED THE SOUTHERN ALPS ARE SITUATED ON THE
WESTERN SIDE OF THE SOUTHERN ISLAND. HERE YOU MAY FIND,
MOUNT COOK, NEW ZEALAND'S HIGHEST PEAK AT 3764M. TO THE
EAST THE HILLS RARELY EXCEED 1829M.

MOST RIVERS ARE SHORT THROUGHOUT NEW ZEALAND BUT ARE SWIFT
FLOWING. THE LONGEST IS SITUATED ON THE NORTHERN ISLAND,
THE WAIKATO AND FLOWS 432KM. ALSO SITUATED ON THE NORTH
ISLAND IS LAKE TAUPO, THIS IS THE LARGEST NATURAL LAKE, SET
IN A VOLCANIC CRATER. EARTHQUAKES AND ACTIVE VOLCANISM ARE
NOT INFREQUENT. TWENTY FIVE PERCENT OF THE LAND IS TAKEN UP
BY FORESTS.
