TAIWAN IS SITUATED OFF THE SOUTHEAST COAST OF CHINA. THE
ISLAND LIES IN THE PACIFIC OCEAN, AND COVERS AN AREA OF
36,000SQ.KM. IT IS BORDERED BY THE EAST CHINA SEA TO THE
NORTH, THE BASHI CHANNEL TO THE SOUTH, THE FORMOSA STRAIT
TO THE WEST AND THE PACIFIC OCEAN TO THE EAST.

APPROXIMATELY TWO THIRDS OF THE LAND IS MADE UP OF HILL AND
MOUNTAINS, WITH 5 MAIN GEOGRAPHICAL REGIONS: THE T'AITUNG
MOUNTAINS, WHICH TEND TO BE RUGGED AND STEEP; THE T'AI-TUNG
RIFT VALLEY, BEING LONG AND NARROW; THE CHUNG-YANG SHAN-MO,
THE CENTRAL RANGE, COMPRISING OF 3 PARALLEL CHAINS, THE
CHUNG-YANG, THE YU SHAN AND THE A-LI SHAN; THE HILL
COUNTRY, WHICH IS WIDE AND VAST; AND FINALLY THE COASTAL
PLAINS, THESE ARE ABUNDANT IN BASINS. THE PING-TUNG BASIN
IS SITUATED IN THE SOUTH, WITH THE TAI PEI BASIN IN THE
NORTH, THE T'AI CHUNG BASIN IN THE CENTRAL WEST AND I-IAN
BASIN IN THE NORTHEAST.
THE CHO-SHUI IN THE WEST AND THE TAN-SHUI IN THE NORTH ARE
THE TWO PRINCIPAL RIVERS OF TAIWAN.
