ROAD
====
SEAT-BELTS ARE COMPULSORY FOR DRIVERS AND FRONT SEAT
PASSENGERS. DRIVE ON THE LEFT AND PASS ON THE RIGHT.
PEDESTRIANS HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY ON A PEDESTRIAN CROSSING.
WHEN A MOTORWAY IS MARKED WITH AN M, THIS MEANS THEY ARE
TOLL FREE.
SPEED LIMITS - 48KPH IN TOWNS AND CITIES, 112KPH ON
MOTORWAYS AND 96KPH ON MAIN ROADS.
DRUNKEN DRIVING IS SEVERELY PUNISHED.

CAR RENTAL - THERE ARE MANY LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL FIRMS
THROUGHOUT THE UNITED KINGDOM. SOME AGENCIES HAVE SPECIAL
PACKAGES FEATURING UNLIMITED MILEAGE. IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE
TO RENT A CHAUFFEUR DRIVEN CAR.

BICYCLE RENTAL - BRITAIN IS ONE OF EUROPE'S MOST POPULAR
AND SCENIC CYCLING AREAS. TRAINS WILL CARRY BIKES FREE OF
CHARGE.

LONDON TRANSPORT
BUSES - LONDON HAS BOTH SINGLE AND DOUBLE DECKER BUSES. THE
NETWORK TENDS TO BE COMPLICATED, SO YOU SHOULD ASK FOR HELP
WHEN NEEDED. THESE SERVICES RUN FROM EARLY IN THE MORNING
UNTIL MIDNIGHT. ON THE DOUBLE DECKER BUSES A CONDUCTOR WILL
CIRCULATE AMONG THE PASSENGERS COLLECTING THE FARES,
WHEREAS ON A SINGLE DECKER YOU INSERT THE FARE AT THE ENTRY
GATE. LONDON IS CONNECTED WITH THE COUNTRYSIDE BY GREEN
LINE BUSES.

TAXIS - TAXIS MAY BE HAILED DOWN IN THE STREET, BUT WILL
ONLY STOP IF THE SIGN IS LIT. IT IS BEST TO GO TO A TAXI
RANK, WHICH MAY BE FOUND AT MAIN RAILWAY STATIONS, PORTS OR
AIRPORTS, AND IN SOME MAIN STREETS. MAKE SURE IF THERE IS A
METER THAT IT IS RUNNING, AND IF NOT ASK THE FARE BEFORE
SETTING OUT.

UNDERGROUND - THE UNDERGROUND IN LONDON IS OTHERWISE KNOWN
AS THE TUBE. IT IS BY FAR THE QUICKEST WAY OF GETTING
AROUND LONDON. MAPS ARE COLOUR CODED AND MAY BE FOUND IN
THE STATIONS. THESE TUBES RUN FROM FIVE THIRTY IN THE
MORNING UNTIL MIDNIGHT ON WEEKDAYS AND FROM SEVEN THIRTY IN
THE MORNING UNTIL ELEVEN THIRTY IN THE EVENING ON SUNDAYS.

TRAINS EXCEPT AT THE RUSH HOUR. SLEEPING BERTHS MUST BE
BOOKED WELL IN ADVANCE. ON SOME OF THE LOCAL TRAIN, THERE
ARE STILL SOME OLD FASHIONED CARRIAGES. WOMEN ARE NOT
ADVISED TO TRAVEL ALONE IN THESE CARRIAGES, AS THE DOORS OF
THE CARRIAGE OPEN STRAIGHT INTO THE COMPARTMENTS AND THERE
IS NO ACCESS TO ANOTHER CARRIAGE OR CORRIDOR.
