URUGUAY IS SITUATED IN SOUTHEASTERN SOUTH AMERICA, COVERING
AN AREA OF 176,215SQ.KM. IT IS BORDERED BY ARGENTINA TO THE
WEST, BY THE ATLANTIC OCEAN TO THE SOUTH, AND FINALLY BY
BRAZIL TO THE EAST AND THE NORTH.

URUGUAY MAY BE DIVIDED UP INTO 5 GEOGRAPHICAL REGIONS: A
SMALL ALLUVIAL COASTAL LOWLAND SITUATED IN THE SOUTH, WITH
A MOUNTAINOUS AREA TO THE EAST, THE LOW PLAINS AREA
SITUATED TOWARDS THE MIDDLE OF THE COUNTRY AND THE NORTHERN
CENTRAL REGION; THE CUCHILLA DE HAEDO AND THE CUCHILLA
GRANDE HIGHLANDS IN THE NORTHWEST AND THE SOUTHEAST AND
THE LOW SLOPING MOUNTAINS IN THE NORTHEAST, WITH THE
HIGHEST ELEVATION REACHING 501M. THIS MOUNTAIN IS CALLED
CERRO MIRCDER AND IS SITUATED IN THE CUCHILLA GRANDE.

THE RIO NEGRO IS THE PRINCIPAL RIVER. THE EMBALSE DEL RIO
NEGRO,IS A LARGE RESERVOIR AT THE RIO NEGRO DAM AND IS ONE
OF THE LARGEST MAN-MADE LAKES IN SOUTH AMERICA. FORESTS
COVER LESS THAN 5% OF THE TOTAL LAND AREA.
