GENERAL DESCRIPTION.

THESE ISLANDS ARE THE MOST NORTHERLY GROUP OF CARIBBEAN
ISLANDS AND ARE SITUATED IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN AND THE
ENCLOSED CARIBBEAN SEA. THE BAHAMAS ARE MADE UP OF ABOUT
700 ISLANDS, MOST OF WHICH ARE LONG AND NARROW, THEIR
MAIN FEATURE BEING THE SEA. THEY ARE MADE UP OF FLATTENED
PEAKS OF MOUNTAINS RISING OUT OF THE ATLANTIC, WITH THE
HIGHEST BEING MOUNT ALVERNIA AT APPROXIMATELY 63M. EACH
ISLAND RISE FROM THE EAST TO A LOW RIDGE BEYOND WHICH
BEAUTIFUL LAGOONS AND MANGROVES SWAMPS ARE LOCATED. THE
BAHAMAS ISLANDS ARE MARKED BY THEIR PLENTIFUL CORAL REEFS
AND SANDY BEACHES. THE BAHAMAS ARE DIVIDED INTO TWO
OCEANIC FEATURES, THE LITTLE BAHAMA BANK AND THE GREAT
BAHAMA BANK.
