BYELORUSSIA, ONCE KNOWN AS WHITE RUSSIA, IS BORDERED BY
LATVIA AND LITHUANIA IN THE NORTHWEST; RUSSIA AND THE
UKRAINE ON THE NORTH, EAST AND SOUTH AND POLAND TO THE
WEST. IT IS A RELATIVELY FLAT NATION WITH EXTENSIVE LOW,
HILLY TABLELANDS, ALTERNATING WITH PLAINS AND LOWLANDS.
MUCH OF THE LAND IS UNINHABITED EXPANSES OF SWAMP AND A
THIRD OF THE TERRITORY IS FOREST. THE HIGHEST POINT IS
DZERZHINSKY MOUNTAIN AT AN ELEVATION OF 346 METERS. MORE
THAN HALF OF THE COUNTRY LIES BETWEEN 100 TO 200 METERS.
RIVERS AND LAKES ARE A MAJOR FEATURE IN BYELORUSSIA AND ARE
USED FOR SHIPPING, FLOATING TIMBER AND GENERATING POWER. IN
ALL THE 20,800 STREAMS ACHIEVE A COMBINED LENGTH OF
90,600KM. THE 10,800 LAKES ARE LOCATED MOSTLY IN THE NORTH.
