GENERAL DESCRIPTION.

BELIZE IN THE NORTHEASTERN PART OF CENTRAL AMERICA COVERS
AN AREA OF 22,965 SQ KM AND BORDERS THE CARIBBEAN SEA ON
THE SOUTH AND WEST. BELIZE IS A LAND OF SWAMPS, MOUNTAINS,
AND TROPICAL JUNGLE. THE NORTHERN PART IS MOSTLY SWAMPY
LOWLANDS RISING LESS THAN 60M ABOVE THE SEA.

THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE COUNTRY IS MOUNTAINOUS WITH THE
MAYA MOUNTAINS EXTENDING NORTHEASTWARD FROM THE GUATEMALAN
BORDER. THE COCKSCOMB MOUNTAINS RUN TOWARD THE SEA AND
CONTAIN VICTORIA PEAK, 1,112M. THE WORLD'S SECOND LARGEST
BARRIER REEF LIES OFF THE COAST OF BELIZE. THE MAJOR
RIVERS ARE THE HONDA, WHICH FORMS THE BOUNDARY IN THE NORTH
WITH MEXICO; THE BELIZE RIVER AND THE NEW RIVER.
