THE SECOND LARGEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD, TAKING UP THE
NORTHERN TWO FIFTHS OF NORTH AMERICA AND COVERING
APPROXIMATELY 9,959,219 SQ. KM. THE LENGTH OF CANADA FROM
TOP TO BOTTOM IS ALMOST 4600KM. CANADA IS SURROUNDED TO
THE NORTH BY THE ARCTIC OCEAN, TO THE SOUTH BY THE USA,
TO THE WEST BY THE PACIFIC OCEAN AND THE STATE OF ALASKA,
AND FINALLY TO THE EAST BY THE ATLANTIC OCEAN.

IT IS POSSIBLE TO DIVIDE THE COUNTRY INTO TWO GEOGRAPHICAL
AREAS. THE FIRST BEING THE LARGE INTERIOR LOWLAND REGION,
COVERING A LARGE AREA OF THE COUNTRY AND INCLUDING THE
CANADIAN SHIELD, THE GREAT LAKES - ST. LAWRENCE LOWLANDS.
THE SECOND BEING A LARGE RANGE OF HIGHLANDS MADE UP OF THE
INNUTIAN MOUNTAINS IN THE NORTHERN HIGHLANDS.

THE CANADIAN SHIELD IS THE LARGEST AREA OF THE COUNTRY,
IT HAS A MONOTONOUS LANDSCAPE WITH LOW RELIEF, RARELY
REACHING 600M. THE WESTERN REGION IS MARKED BY A CHAIN OF
LAKES FROM THE NORTHWEST TO SOUTHEAST TOWARDS LAKE SUPERIOR.
THE GREAT LAKES ARE SITUATED IN THE AREA EXTENDING FROM
SOUTHWESTERN ONTARIO TO NORTHERN ONTARIO, ALONG THE BORDER
WITH THE USA. THE GREAT LAKES ARE LAKE ONTARIO, LAKE ERIE,
LAKE HURON, LAKE SUPERIOR AND LAKE MICHIGAN. ALL OF THE
GREAT LAKES, EXCEPT FOR LAKE MICHIGAN ARE ON THE CANADA/USA
BORDER. THE MAIN HIGHLANDS ARE IN THE WESTERN SECTION OF
THE CORDILLERA, WITH MANY PEAKS REACHING 4,500M AND
MT. LOGAN REACHING 5,951M.
