CENTURIES 300 KM FROM TBILISI, IN ASPINDZA REGION IN THE
SOUTH WESTERN GEORGIA.
A CAVE MONASTERY & A COMPLEX OF MAN-MADE DWELLINGS CARVED
IN THE 2ND HALF OF THE 12TH CENTURY. LYING 1300 METRES
ABOVE SEA LEVEL, THIS 13 TIER ENSEMBLE EXTEND OVER 500
METRES. THE CHURCH OF THE ASSUMPTION IS THE IDEOLOGICAL
CENTRE OF THE MONASTERY. THE UNIQUE INTERIOR FRESCOES
ADD TO THE EMINENCE OF THE VARDZIA ENSEMBLE.

THE GONIO (APSARI) FORTRESS
FORTRESS OF GONIO IS ONE OF THE BEST PRESERVED ARCHITECTURAL
MONUMENTS. IT IS SITUATED IN THE VILLAGE OF GONIO ON THE COAST
OF THE BLACK SEA. A WEALTH OF GOLD ARTEFACTS DATING BACK TO THE
2ND-3RD CENTURIES WAS DISCOVERED ON THE TERRITORY OF THE GONIO
FORTRESS IN 1974.
