POLAND LIES BETWEEN THE CONTINENTAL LOWLAND BLOCK
OF EASTERN EUROPE AND THE MOUNTAINOUS PENINSULA OF
WESTERN EUROPE COVERING AN AREA OF 312,677 SQ KM.
ON THE NORTH THE COUNTRY BORDERS THE BALTIC SEA;
THE SOUTHERN BOUNDARY RUNS ALONG THE PEAKS OF THE
CARPATHIAN AND SUDETY MOUNTAINS WITH CZECHOSLOVAKIA
LYING BEYOND. THE EASTERN AND WESTERN BOUNDARIES FOLLOW
THE BUG AND ODRA-NYSA RIVERS. RUSSIA LIES TO THE NORTH;
LITHUANIA, NORTHEAST; BYELORUSSIA AND THE UKRAINE TO
THE EAST AND GERMANY TO THE WEST.

POLAND'S AVERAGE ELEVATION IS ONLY 173M ABOVE SEA LEVEL
GIVING IT A LOWLAND LANDSCAPE. THE NORTHERN BALTIC COAST
IS COMPOSED OF SWAMPS AND DUNES; SOUTH OF THESE IS A HILLY
AREA OF A 1000 LAKES. THE MIDDLE POLISH LOWLANDS FORM THE
MAJOR PART OF THE COUNTRY. THE LITTLE POLAND UPLANDS TO
THE SOUTH ARE MADE UP OF HIGHLANDS AND OLD MOUNTAINS. THE
MOST SCENIC PART OF THE COUNTRY IS THE CARPATHIAN FOOTHILLS
ON THE SOUTHERN BORDER.
