Cases of
dengue fever
, transmitted by mosquitoes, have been reported in Puerto Rico in recent years. Early symptoms include sudden fever and aching joints, after which a rash sets in. The disease itself, which typically lasts several days, isn't treatable, but symptoms are. The best medicine is prevention, through the use of liberal amounts of mosquito repellent.
