SWEDEN IS SITUATED ON THE SCANDINAVIAN PENINSULA AND IS
EUROPE'S FOURTH LARGEST NATION. THE COUNTRY COVERS AN AREA
OF APPROXIMATELY 449,964 SQ KM. NORWAY IS LOCATED ON THE
WESTERN AND NORTHWESTERN BORDER, WITH FINLAND TO THE
NORTHEAST, THE NORTH SEA TO THE SOUTHWEST, THE BALTIC SEA
TO THE SOUTHEAST AND THE GULF OF BOTHNIA TO THE EAST. IT
IS POSSIBLE TO DIVIDE SWEDEN INTO FOUR MAIN GEOGRAPHICAL
REGIONS: THE SMALAND, NORRLAND, SVEALAND AND SKANE.

THE SMALAND CONSISTS OF AN AREA OF LOW HIGHLANDS, RICH IN
FORESTS AND PEAT LANDS. PRACTICALLY ALL ELEVATIONS ARE
LESS THAN 152M. NORRLAND IS A MORE MOUNTAINOUS REGION,
COVERING APPROXIMATELY TWO THIRDS OF SWEDEN AND INCLUDES
THE COUNTRY'S HIGHEST PEAK, MOUNT KEBNEKAISE AT 2111M
ABOVE SEA LEVEL. THIS REGION IS ALSO RICH IN FORESTS,
WATERFALLS AND LARGE METALLIC ORE DEPOSITS.

SVEALAND IS THE NEXT AREA AND CONSISTS OF A LOWLAND LAKE
COUNTRY. GLACIAL GRAVEL RIDGES AND PRACTICALLY ALL OF
SWEDEN'S 90,000 LAKES FEATURE THROUGHOUT THIS AREA.
SWEDEN'S LARGEST LAKE IS LAKE VANERN AT APPROXIMATELY 3593
SQ KM. LAST BUT NOT LEAST IS SKANE, AN AREA OF SMALL
AGRICULTURAL PLAINS IN THE SOUTH. SKANE IS RICH MOSTLY IN
MARINE SOILS.

THE GOTA, THE DAL AND THE ANGERMAN ARE THREE OF SWEDEN'S
MAJOR RIVERS.
