GENERAL DESCRIPTION.
--------------------
ARMENIA'S CLIMATE IS INFLUENCED BY ITS LANDLOCKED LOCATION
SURROUNDED BY THE HIGH MOUNTAIN RANGES OF THE CAUCASUS. THE
AVERAGE ALTITUDE OF THE HIGHLANDS IS 1,800M ABOVE SEA
LEVEL. THE CLIMATE VARIES WITH ELEVATIONS RANGING FROM THE
DRY SUBTROPICAL AND DRY CONTINENTAL FOUND IN THE PLAINS AND
FOOTHILLS UP TO A HEIGHT OF 900 - 1,300 METERS, TO THE COLD
TYPE ABOVE THE 2000 - 2,500 METERS. ON THE MOUNTAIN SLOPES,
YEARLY RAINFALL REACHES 8000MM, WHILE THE INLAND VALLEYS
AND PLAINS RECEIVE ONLY 2000 - 4000MM PER YEAR. SUMMERS ARE
LONG AND HOT EXCEPT IN THE HIGH ALTITUDE REGIONS. THE
AVERAGE JUNE TO AUGUST TEMPERATURES ON THE PLAIN CAN RANGE
FROM 25C TO 42C DEGREES. JANUARY WINTER TEMPERATURES
AVERAGE -5C DEGREES IN THE PLAINS AND FOOTHILLS TO -12C
DEGREES IN THE MOUNTAINS. THE SEVEREST WINTER WEATHER IS
FOUND ON THE ELEVATED WINDSWEPT PLATEAUS. THE PLEASANT
SEASON IS THE SUNNY, MILD AUTUMN.
CLOTHING: LIGHT WEIGHT TO MEDIUM, WITH A SWEATER FOR THE
COOL EVENINGS. IN MOUNTAIN OR HILLY REGIONS WARMER WEAR
IS MORE APPROPRIATE. A SOLID, COMFORTABLE PAIR OF SHOES
MAY ALSO BE USEFUL.
