ARMENIA LIES IN THE SOUTHERN PORTION OF THE TRANSCAUCASIAN
REGION ON THE NORTHWESTERN BORDER OF ASIA AND COVERS AN
AREA OF 29,800 SQ KM. IT IS A MOUNTAINOUS COUNTRY WITH A
VARIETY OF SCENERY. HALF OF THE TERRITORY LIES BETWEEN 1000
TO 2000M. THE NORTHWESTERN PART OF THE ARMENIAN HIGHLAND
WHICH CONTAINS THE HIGHEST PEAK, MOUNT ARAGATS, 4000M, IS A
LAND OF MOUNTAIN RANGES, DEEP RIVER VALLEYS AND LAVA
PLATEAUS WITH EXTINCT VOLCANOES. TO THE NORTH AND EAST LIE
THE MOUNTAIN RANGES OF THE LITTLE CAUCASUS. THE EASTERN
PART CONTAINS THE SEVAN DEPRESSION, A HIGH PLATEAU, THAT
INCLUDES THE 1,360 SQ. KM. LAKE SEVAN. THE ARARAT PLAIN IN
THE SOUTHWEST, AT THE FOOT OF MOUNT ARAGATS AND THE GEGAM
RANGE, IS CUT BY ARMENIA'S MOST IMPORTANT RIVER, THE ARAS.
THIS PLAIN IS THE MOST PROSPEROUS AND DENSELY POPULATED
AREA; THE CENTER OF ARMENIAN ECONOMY AND CULTURE.
