ITALY IS A SOUTH CENTRAL EUROPEAN COUNTRY, WHICH STRETCHES
OUT INTO THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA. BORDERED TO THE NORTH BY
AUSTRIA, SWITZERLAND AND SLOVENIA. TO THE EAST THE COUNTRY
IS SURROUNDED BY THE ADRIATIC AND TO THE SOUTH AND WEST BY
THE MEDITERRANEAN.

THE COUNTRY IS VERY MOUNTAINOUS, WITH THE ALPS STRETCHING
FROM EAST TO WEST ALONG THE NORTHERN BOUNDARY TO MEET THE
APENNINE MOUNTAIN RANGE ALONG THE LIGUARIAN COAST. THE
APPENINES SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE SOUTH AND ON INTO SICILY.
ITALY'S HIGHEST PEAK IS MONTE ROSA AT 4,634M.

LOWLANDS OR PLAINS ARE SITUATED MOSTLY IN THE PO RIVER
VALLEY. THE VALLEY IS ENCLOSED TO THE NORTH BY THE ALPS
AND TO THE SOUTH BY THE APENNINES. REMAINING LOWLANDS SPAN
THE COASTAL AREAS.

ITALY'S MAIN RIVER IS THE PO AND IS JOINED BY MANY LARGE
TRIBUTARIES FORMING SEVERAL NATURAL LAKES. THE LUGANO,
COMO AND LAGO MAGGIORE ARE SOME OF THE COUNTRY'S MAJOR
ALPINE LAKES. THE ARNO AND THE TIBER RIVER ARE ALSO TWO
IMPORTANT RIVERS WHICH FLOW PARALLEL
TO THE ADRIATIC COAST.
