UZBEKISTAN, 447,400 SQ KM, IS MADE UP OF DESERT, OASES AND
HIGH MOUNTAIN RANGES. IT LIES IN THE MIDDLE OF CENTRAL
ASIA BETWEEN THE AMU DARYA AND SYRDARYA RIVERS. FOUR-
FIFTHS OF THE TERRITORY IS FLAT SUN-BAKED DESERTLANDS. THE
UZBEK IS BORDERED BY THE STEPPES OF KAZAKHISTAN ON THE
NORTH AND NORTHWEST; BY THE MOUNTAINS OF KYRGYZSTAN AND
TAJIKISTAN ON THE EAST AND SOUTHEAST; BY THE DESERT OF
TURKMENISTAN TO THE SOUTHWEST; AND IN THE SOUTH BY
AFGHANISTAN. ALL OF THE 600 STREAMS ORIGINATING IN THE
EASTERN MOUNTAINS DRAIN INTO THE ARAL SEA IN THE NORTH.
