European Economic Area nationals, however, may stay longer than three months on condition that they secure work for a further period of three months minimum. Once in employment, there is no time limit on the length of stay in Iceland but
residence and work permits
are required, normally valid for five years, and available from the
Icelandic Statistical Bureau
(Hagstofa Islands, Pjodskra, Skuggasund 3, Reykjavik; tel 560 9850). Non-EU nationals can only apply for residence permits before leaving home, and must be able to prove they can support themselves without working. As regards
customs regulations
, all visitors to Iceland, irrespective of country of origin, can bring in the following: either one litre of spirits and one litre of wine, or one litre of spirits and six litres of beer, or one litre of wine and six litres of beer or two litres of wine. In addition to this, 200 cigarettes, or 250g of other tobacco products, are also permitted.
