For information before you go, the Icelandic Tourist Board maintains several promotion offices abroad, as do Icelandair and their agents, where you'll be able to pick up brochures of the highlights, plus information on tours, transport and accommodation. There's also heaps of information available about Iceland on the Internet .

Once you're in the country, ReykjavAk's tourist information centre has information and brochures for the whole country, with independent tourist information offices in almost every other town, often housed in the bus station. Wherever you are, your accommodation is another good source of local details; for instance, families may have lived on particular farms for generations, and have very thorough knowledge of the region.
